Over the past few decades, the assortment of fruit trees popular among gardeners, in particular apple trees, has undergone several updates. This trend is determined by the dynamism of the development of culture and is associated with the emergence of varieties belonging to the new generation. The Zvezdochka category belongs to the category of apple varieties that are consistently popular with gardeners in our country.
Zvezdochka is a winter variety bred as a result of selection at the All-Russian Scientific-Research Institute of Genetics and Selection of Fruit Plants named after Michurin. The author of the variety was breeder S.F. Chernenko. Variety "Zvezdochka" was obtained as a result of work on crossing varieties "Pepinka Lithuanian" with "Anis".
Fairly widespread, "Asterisk" received almost immediately after the withdrawal. Fruit trees of this variety are zoned in the Northwest, Central and Volga-Vyatka, as well as the Middle Volga regions of our country. Zvezdochka apple trees are very often used as starting material in modern selection.
Zvezdochka apple-trees belong to tall-growing trees, which are characterized at the initial stage by a rounded crown, replaced after some time by a spreading and drooping version. At the age of twenty, an apple tree of this variety can reach a height of more than five meters with a crown diameter of about six meters.
Fruit trees are characterized by long, thin, reddish-brown, heavily pubescent shoots, on which there are small oval-shaped leaves with serrated edges and short petioles.
The main advantages of the Zvezdochka variety are regular productivity and high palatability of the fruit, which have an intense color and long shelf life. The disadvantages of the variety is the grinding of fruits as the fruit tree ages, which is easily corrected by the implementation of competent and regular pruning.
Zvezdochka apple trees are often found in private gardens in Russia.
Winter varieties of apple trees
Fruits, nutritional value and chemical composition
Fruits have an average or below average value, a flattened-rounded shape with the presence of faint ribs and a smooth surface. The main color of the fruit is light green. Coating is represented by a blurry blush of dark red color. It is present on almost the entire surface of the fruit. The peel has a strong wax coating.
The peduncle is short and thin. The calyx closes a small funnel-shaped telescope. The presence of closed chambers and the complete absence of an axial cavity are characteristic. The pulp of the fruit has a greenish tint and is juicy, fine grain, as well as a good sweet and sour taste.
The parameters of the chemical composition of the fruits are as follows:
- the total amount of sugars is just over 10%;
- the content of titratable acids is not more than 0.65%;
- the amount of solids is slightly more than 13%;
- the amount of ascorbic acid can reach 15 mg for every 100 grams of pulp.
Variety "Asterisk" contains P-active catechins in the amount of 135 mg for every 100 grams of fruit.
Fruit trees of this variety are classified as vigorous. Winter hardiness parameters of the plant are average. The crown is made up of thick skeletal branches and a significant number of fairly thin and flexible branches. The main fruiting focuses on the middle and outer parts of the spreading crown. Most often, fruit formation can be observed on twigs, as well as spears. Sometimes fruits are formed in areas of young annulus.
The shoots are long enough. They are relatively thin, reddish-brown, with a strong pubescence. The leaves on fruit trees of the Zvezdochka variety are small, oval in shape, characterized by a characteristic haze, have a jagged serration and short petioles. Part of the stipule filiform.
By maturity, the variety belongs to winter. The fruiting stage begins in the seventh year after the budding. Productivity is stable and annual. Fruit harvesting occurs in early fall. From a tree at the age of 12, it is possible to collect about 100 kilograms of fruit. A record yield was also recorded - a little over 200 kilograms were collected from one tree of the Zvezdochka variety.
Consumer ripeness of fruits occurs at the stage of storage of apples. As a rule, apples reach full maturity in mid-October. The fruits of this variety are characterized by excellent keeping quality. Apples can be stored in stores for more than six months. Subject to storage conditions, the quality of the fruit remains high until March. The shelf life of fruits in an ordinary basement exceeds five months without loss of commercial quality and appearance.
Landing and care
Disembarkation is carried out in late April or early May after complete snow melting and in the absence of frost. The Zvezdochka variety does not adapt well when planted in the autumn. The apple tree needs good lighting, and it is recommended to plant a fruit tree of this variety on an open southern, southeast, or southwest site. The presence of shade significantly slows down the growth of the apple tree, reduces its productivity, and the fruits lose their color and taste. Landing area should be carefully dug up and loosened.
Saplings of the Zvezdochka variety are planted in deep, wide pits with fertilizers in the form of peat and wood ash. Vertically located seedlings are installed in the central part of the planting pit. The root system is distributed and sprinkled with fertile soil, which is slightly compacted. The root neck of the plant should rise above the ground by six centimeters. Near the plants, it is advisable to make grooves that contribute to the outflow of excess moisture from the roots of the tree.
The first top dressing is introduced in the spring at the planting stage. It is allowed to replace peat with wood ash with humus or horse humus in the amount of one bucket per square meter. In the autumn, complex fertilizers without nitrogen are required. The presence of fertile soil significantly reduces the need for fertilizing.
The Zvezdochka variety is demanding on pruning, which increases yield and is the best option for disease prevention. Pruning is important every spring before the leaves bloom. The variety is characterized by insufficient frost resistance, which requires mulching the soil around the plants in the autumn. Hay, peat, bark or sawdust can be used as mulch.

Diseases and Pests
Variety "Asterisk" has a fairly good immunity against various diseases and is rarely affected by scab. If the plant nevertheless shows signs of this disease, treatment with Chorus should be carried out as soon as possible at the rate of 1 ampoule per bucket of water. Quite rarely, rot damage can be observed, which drugs like "Fundazole" help to get rid of. To protect against powdery mildew, it is recommended to treat the plants with "Topaz".
Apple tree care in the fall
The apple tree variety Zvyozdochka is in demand among Russian gardeners. High-quality care and compliance with the rules of cultivation allow you to get a good harvest and form a stable immunity in plants to most diseases and pests.
