Interesting names are given by our breeders to their offspring. One of them, undoubtedly noteworthy, “Courage” is given to one of the varieties of potatoes. For almost ten years, Kurazh has been officially recognized by Russian vegetable growers. What is behind this extraordinary name?
"Courage" is a medium-early variety of potatoes, that is, it ripens within two and a half months after emergence of seedlings. The bush of this plant can be of medium height, and maybe tall. Leaves are green or dark green. Their sizes are also ambiguous: medium or large. The same can be said about the size of flowers that have a well-marked red-violet color. All these parameters directly depend on the conditions in which the potato grows: the more comfortable they are for it, the more pronounced are the varietal traits of the plant.
The tubers of this potato are red. They have an oval shape, the peel is smooth, and the eyes on the tubers are medium in size. The flesh of "Courage" is yellowish, well-digestible, tastes good. In addition to mashed potatoes, they make good chips from this potato.
This potato variety that has proven itself in gardeners in many ways can be described as medium-stable. Judge for yourself:
- its productivity ranges from 250 to 450 kg per hundred square meters;
- a tuber weighs a little over a hundred grams;
- starch contains almost 20%;
- Having good resistance to cancer of the potato and the golden nematode, Courage is sometimes vulnerable to late blight pathogen.
But the ability to not lose its presentation during transportation over long distances and not to deteriorate during long-term storage (subject to a certain temperature and humidity) for this potato is almost ideal.
This variety has proven itself best when grown almost everywhere in the central and regions of Russia, in Moldova and Ukraine.
How to grow potatoes
Potatoes develop best on moderately acidic soils. In their "deoxidation" ash helps a lot. Courage is recommended to be planted on a site where perennial or annual herbs, legumes, flax, or lupine previously grew.
In the regions where this potato variety is zoned, night cooling and sudden morning frosts can continue until early May. A potato planted long before this time may freeze, because the earth is still not warm enough. This is especially dangerous for pre-sprouted potatoes. Non-sprouted tubers will simply lie in the cold earth, not sprouting. In addition, such plants are more vulnerable to various infections, so it is very important that when planting potatoes, the soil temperature at a depth of 10 centimeters should be at least 8 degrees. Then the tubers will sprout quickly. Typically, this pattern is observed in early May. At this time, a sufficient amount of moisture is still stored in the ground.
The best planting material is medium-sized germinated tubers with sprouts up to 2 cm. Before planting potatoes, previously treated with a stimulant such as Epina, It is recommended to warm one and a half hours in the sun.
If there is a need for ridge planting, the height of the ridge should be up to 12 cm, and its width - 65 cm. In this case, the laying of tubers on light sandy soils is carried out to a depth of 10 cm, and on heavy loamy soils - up to 8 cm.
When planting in furrows or in beds, the distance between tubers should be up to 35 cm, and row spacings are made up to 70 cm wide.
Before planting, soil should be fertilized with organic and mineral fertilizers. Their number depends on the structure of the soil. Mineral fertilizers in most cases are applied at the rate of 3 kg of each species per hundred square meters for the entire season.
Considering the fact that “Courage” refers to medium-early varieties of potatoes (they usually manage to feed them only once a season), they initially make a half dose of fertilizers. This is done in order to comply with environmental safety for potatoes as a food product. And as such top dressing is carried out when the sprouted potato bushes are strong enough, but not yet blooming.
It is best to use fertilizers for these purposes that do not contain chlorine and are easily soluble in water - urea, ammonium nitrate, potassium sulfate and others. There are also complex fertilizers with a balanced content of all the elements necessary for plants, for example, Kemira Universal.
When planting fertilizers mixed with the ground so that they do not fall directly on the tubers.
Recommendations and reviews of gardeners
Variety "Courage" is known to many summer residents. They consider this potato to be very tasty, unpretentious, medium-yielding, but very well preserved. It is harvested in August, when other (later) varieties have not yet gained conditioned ripeness. This is the advantage of this variety.
Experienced gardeners give interesting tips on facilitating the time-consuming process of planting potatoes "Courage" in the country:
- Sites with light, non-clogged weed soil may not be pre-digged.
- In order for the potato rows to be even, you need to draw lines corresponding to them on the ground before digging the pits.
- It is best to fill the pits with soil from neighboring beds without turning it over. Otherwise, the top dried up layer of earth will be below.
- Ash is a valuable fertilizer containing potassium, phosphorus and other substances. But, deoxidizing and fertilizing the soil, it can also provoke the appearance of scab on potatoes. Therefore, it is better to bring ash into the soil in the fall, and not before planting.
What kind of potato to choose
Acquainted with potatoes with the rare name "Courage", we can conclude that this variety, by its characteristics, is quite suitable for planting in suburban areas of central Russia.
