Potato "Zhuravinka" refers to precocious table varieties with high yields, sufficient resistance to disease and resistance to adverse weather factors.
History of creation
The variety was bred by Belarusian breeders and was widely used not only in the homeland, but also in our country. The originator and patent holder is the Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for Potato and Horticulture. The Zhuravinka variety was added to the register of the Russian Federation in 2005. It is recommended for cultivation in the North-West, Central and Volga-Vyatka regions of our country.
Potato "Zhuravinka" is characterized by low, upright bushes with medium-sized green leaves. Venation of leaves of medium intensity; main vein has pronounced anthocyanin staining. The waviness of the edges of the leaves is slightly pronounced.
Small inflorescences, consisting of several flowers with reddish-purple corollas. Berry formation is very rare. The description of the variety declares a uniform appearance of seedlings and a fairly intensive growth of potato tops.
Root crops can have either a round or round-oval shape, covered with smooth or slightly mesh skin of a pronounced red color. Eyes are small in size. Light shoots are medium in size, with a spherical base in shape, reddish-violet color, with slight pubescence, very small apical part, closed type.
The pulp in the section is light, beige-yellow staining, contains from 14% to 19% starchy substances. The intensity of digestibility of pulp at a level from weak to good, type B, C. Potato flesh does not darken and has a good taste. The variety is suitable for use in the production of crisps. Tuberization and root growth rates are average.
The description of the variety is of interest both to the owners of household plots and farms, as well as to specialists of large agro-industrial complexes. Potato "Zhuravinka" refers to multi-layer varieties: each bush on average forms about 15-18 tubers. The variety is characterized by high consumer qualities and marketability of the crop.
Zhuravinka is immune to potato nematode and cancer (Patotype-1), demonstrates resistance to the defeat of the black leg, common scab and viruses X, S, M. Indicators of resistance of the variety to damage by diseases such as rhizoctoniosis, late blight of foliage and root crops, viruses Y and L, medium.
Standard productivity is about 75 kg / 10 sq. m. The average marketability of root crops is not lower than 83-96%. Indicators of keeping quality at the level of 93%
How to spud potatoes
Potato "Zhuravinka" should be planted strictly adhering to the optimal planting time, depending on the agro-climatic zone:
- in the northern regions, landing is carried out no earlier than mid-May;
- landing in the Central Federal District is carried out from late April to early May;
- in the southern regions, potatoes are planted in the second and third decades of April.
The Zhuravinka variety is very difficult to tolerate elevated doses of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and excessive waterlogging of the soil, as well as a deficit of soil moisture. Optimal for planting seed potatoes are areas with light and medium soils in terms of quality and particle size distribution.
Pre-planting treatment of tubers consists in germination, gardening, as well as processing with means of "Carvitol" or "Zircon", which helps to strengthen growth processes, increase productivity and increase potato immunity.
The most optimal and recommended distance between rows is 60-70 cm. Between plants in the same row you need to keep a distance of 25-30 cm. Planting depth on loams should be 5-7 cm, and when grown on sandy and super-sandy soils, the depth of the seed material does not should be more than 8-10 cm.
Excessively deep seeding of planting material provokes a delay in the appearance and weakening of seedlings, and also contributes to the grinding of root crops. Too superficial planting results in the formation of a potato nest from green irregular root crops.
It is very important to plant seed potatoes in well-moistened and optimally loose soil, which guarantees the most complete initial development of plants, as well as a good laying of potato stolons.
When planting in dry or compacted soil, a sharp decrease in the germination of planting material and the appearance of filamentous sprouts are observed. If planting is carried out in waterlogged soil, then strangulation of tubers and a complete loss of germination can be observed.
The period from planting the prepared material to the emergence of seedlings in potatoes Zhuravinka takes 12-25 days. For the good development of this vegetable crop, it is very important to maintain the soil in a state of stable friability and uniform moisture throughout the entire growing season.
When the potato tops reach a height of 15-20 cm, it is necessary to carry out the first hilling of plants. In dry weather and inadequate soil moisture, it is recommended to replace the earthing process with conventional loosening.
Hilling is best done after rain or watering, with moist soil, which will protect it from crusting. Hilling is an activity that stimulates the formation of additional roots and stolons, which positively affects productivity.

Potato growers reviews
Potato "Zhuravinka" earned a huge number of positive reviews, which characterizes it as one of the most popular varieties of Belarusian selection. According to potato growers and agronomists, in order to get stable high yields when cultivating this variety, one should pay attention that Zhuravinka is very responsive to fertilizers, but increased doses of nitrogen can negatively affect the quality and quantity of tubers.
Potato flesh tastes great, does not darken during the process of peeling and heat treatment, and also boils very well, which is important when preparing mashed potatoes and casseroles.
Comparison of the harvest of different varieties of potatoes
It is noted that the variety feels very good with systematic and abundant watering. The increased resistance of Zhuravinka to potato diseases minimizes the need for chemicals. The positive characteristics of Zhuravinka potato agronomists include a very long period of rest of tubers, as well as good keeping quality of the harvested crop. It is able to remain almost without loss throughout the winter period.
