Features of hydrangea cultivation in the Urals

Hydrangea (Hydrángea) belongs to the genus of flowering plants, the Hydrangea family. Currently, approximately 70-80 species of this amazingly beautiful plant are known. Even hydrangeas planted alone can transform the homestead territory, therefore flower growers are very willing to grow them in different regions of our country.

Features of climatic conditions of the Ural region

In the Urals, the most widespread mountain-podzolic soils. In the northern part of the region mountain taiga and podzolic type of soil prevail. On the western and eastern slopes, podzolic and marsh-peat soils. In the Urals, on the territory of the Kurgan and Perm region, gray forest soils with areas of leached chernozems are found. The Trans-Urals are represented by sod-podzolic, gray forest and marsh-peat soils. Well-developed mountain forest gray soils, as well as mountain meadow soils, are frequent in the Southern Urals.

The weather and climatic conditions in the Urals are typically mountainous; therefore, an uneven distribution of precipitation is observed not only in different regions, but also within one particular region. The West Siberian Plain is characterized by a rather harsh continental climate. In the mountainous regions of Western Siberia, climatic conditions are milder. To the west of the Ural Mountains, more rainfall, rather high humidity. There is much less rainfall in the Trans-Urals, and the climate here is drier, with pronounced continentality.

The best varieties of hydrangeas for growing in the Urals

In the Ural region, the temperature in the winter months often stays below 35-40 ˚С. Such conditions for most types of hydrangeas, including large-flowered, oak-leaved, garden and petiole, are critical. In the flower gardens of garden plots and household plots in the Urals, the most popular and demanded are hydrangea tree and panicled. These are the most winter-hardy and unpretentious plants from the Hortense family.

Panicled hydrangea, or Hydrangea paniculata, is represented by several varieties.

All of the above varieties tolerate Ural frosts quite well in winter, but for recently planted and young plants it is recommended to equip a light shelter that protects hydrangea from freezing. Tree and panicle hydrangea look very impressive and attractive when grown in a standard form. With the help of targeted shaping pruning carried out over four seasons, it is possible to obtain a very original and unusual standard tree.

Dates and rules of landing

Planting hydrangeas can be carried out in early spring or autumn. In the climatic conditions of the Urals, it is best to plant this flowering plant in the spring. Planting and growing hydrangea gardening does not present special difficulties not only for experienced but also for beginner gardeners.

Plants are planted in well-lit or with some shading areas with a distance between seedlings of 1-1.5 m. Do not deepen the root neck. The dimensions of the landing pit should be 35 x 35 x 35 cm. It is recommended that a third bucket of high-quality humus and high peat be added to the pit. The branched root system of the planted plant must be carefully straightened. Immediately after planting, hydrangeas need to be watered abundantly.

Cultivation and care

To grow a beautifully flowering and healthy plant, you must adhere to standard care measures. Caring for hydrangeas is simple and, in addition to pruning, is not much different from caring for any other shrubs grown in open ground.

EventFeatures and Technology
WateringWater should be soft, well-settled, room temperature. Watering is carried out in the morning or in the evening, at the rate of a pair of buckets of water for each adult bush
Top dressingThe first fertilizer application is carried out in the spring, and further fertilizing is carried out in June and at the flowering stage. As a top dressing, it is recommended to use a mixture of 10 g of urea, superphosphate, potassium nitrate with the addition of fermented bird droppings in a ratio of 1: 10 with water
Spring pruningBe sure to remove all damaged and frozen shoots, as well as prune weak and painful branches that slow down plant growth. Annual shoots need to be shortened to four buds
Autumn pruningAll dried inflorescences should be removed from the bushes. If necessary, rejuvenate plants, remove all shoots, except for the five most powerful and well developed
Shelter for the winterYou can bend the plant to the ground and cover it with lapnik or use any non-woven garden covering material for wrapping the aerial part. Trunk circles in the autumn period are necessarily mulched with peat or sawdust

Quite rarely, plants can be affected by powdery mildew or chlorosis, and also be damaged by aphids or spider mites. To stop the development of the disease or relieve hydrangea from pests, you should regularly inspect the plant and, if necessary, use insect-fungicidal agents.

Types and varieties of hydrangeas

You can grow beautiful flowering plants almost everywhere, including in the difficult climatic conditions of the Ural region. Beautiful hydrangea is no exception: it is grown by many local growers. The main condition for success is the right choice of variety and competent care of the plant.
